C Returns To Top Of Tiobe Index

C fans, your time has come (again). After four arguably long years, the C programming language has made it back to the top of the Tiobe Programming Language index, scoring the number one spot for April of 2010.

Of course, C's return has perhaps not come under the most heroic circumstances; you can dismiss any mental imagery of knights winning a battle against some great opponent. Instead, it's a bit more like C laid siege to a city and waited until disease and a lack of food weakened everybody.

A paragraph accompanying the latest Tiobe index results explained, "The scores for C have been pretty constant through the years, varying between the 15% and 20% market share for almost 10 years. So the main reason for C's number 1 position is not C's uprise, but the decline of its competitor Java. Java has a long-term downward trend."

Still, a win's a win, and for what it's worth, C# and Objective-C also went up in the rankings this month. (C++ held its position in third place.)

It will no doubt be interesting to see if/how long C can hold onto first place and keep Java behind it.
