Demand For Programmers Remains Strong

A disheartening piece of news came out today: unemployment is at a four-year high. Sooner or later, it seems the people in charge of this country's economic system will have to admit a recession is taking place. Yet, generally speaking, folks familiar with C++ and C# are in no immediate danger.

Search for either of those terms in Google News if you want to see some supporting facts. An occasional press release will show up in the results, and you'll notice some other odds and ends, too. Most of the results appear to be "wanted" ads, though, which indicates either a serious algorithmic goof or an overwhelming market need. Or a combination of the two.

Then there's the anecdotal evidence. Veteran Slashdot member "Mongoose Disciple" writes, "[T]he last two places I contracted at were looking to hire C# developers who had also been exposed to Subversion." And this comment came in response to an entire O'Reilly Radar report suggesting that an open source job boom is taking place.

Conditions won't be uniform across all geographic regions, of course, and since there's no telling how long the economy will remain in questionable shape, things could take a downturn. Still, this seemed like a nice piece of news with which to end a workweek and start a month.
