02.04.10 Facebook's HipHop Announcement Puts C++ In The Spotlight By
Doug CaverlyAbout three months ago, we discussed the fact that C# and C++ had been declared a couple of Microsoft's favorite languages. Now, C++ has also gotten a sort of nod from Facebook as the social network unveiled something called HipHop for PHP. Haiping Zhao, a senior engineer, explained on the Facebook Developers blog yesterday, "HipHop programmatically transforms your PHP source code into highly optimized C++ and then uses g++ to compile it. . . . Overall HipHop allows us to keep the best aspects of PHP while taking advantage of the performance benefits of C++." Of course, since Facebook didn't fully embrace C++, perhaps this doesn't make for the strongest possible endorsement. Still, it says a lot that Facebook, with its 350 million or so users, is interested in C++. Some people may learn about the programming language just to keep up with the times. This development is sure to cause a lot of people to learn C++ for practical reasons, too, since Facebook's developer community is so large. And everything about HipHip has been released on GitHub under the open source PHP license, so it may also spread in other ways. Hopefully a lot of good will come of this as ideas are exchanged.
