Garbage Collection And C

August TIOBE Index Indicates Growth

By Doug Caverly

The C, C++, and C# programming languages all performed well in the latest TIOBE Programming Community Index. One of them held its ground in terms of overall rankings, while the other two managed to become even more popular.

C is the language that maintained its position; at number two, it's only ranked behind Java. Its rating actually increased by 1.04 percent between August 2008 and August 2009, too, so C appears to be catching up with its top rival.

Then there's C++, which captured third place, to consider. Its climb from fourth to third didn't just occur as a result of another programming language's decline, since C++ increased its grip by 0.44 percent on a year-over-year basis.

Finally, we arrive at C#. The Tiobe Index indicates that, over the past year, it moved from the eighth position to the seventh, upping its rating by an impressive 0.75 percent in the process.

A lot of other programming languages weren't so lucky, of course; in a competition, not everyone or everything can come out a winner. So fans of C, C++, and C# can pat themselves on the back for backing what seem to be some smart bets.
