08.06.09 "Concepts" Separated From C++0x By
Doug CaverlyMore information regarding the next C++ standard has become available, but unfortunately, the news isn't all that good. The release date remains a while away, and the anticipated "concepts" mechanism has been kiboshed. We first mentioned concepts a little over two months ago, when Verity Stobbs characterized the in-the-works idea as scary. Apparently, since then, a few important people have come to share her point of view. Bjarne Stroustrup recently wrote, "The stated aim of 'concepts' was to make generic programming more accessible to most programmers [BS&GDR2003], but that aim seemed to me to have been seriously compromised: Rather than making generic programming more accessible, 'concepts' were becoming yet another tool in the hands of experts (only). . ."
He later continued, "I worried that even use of libraries implemented using 'concepts' would put new burdens on programmers. I felt that the design of 'concepts' and its use in the standard library did not adequately reflect our experience with 'concepts' over the last few years." As for the release date of C++0x, it seems that we're looking at 2010 at the earliest, so the axing of concepts hasn't really done much to speed things along.
