C Books On Top In India

By Doug Caverly

Remember the Tom Clancy years? Or maybe Stephen King's string of successes? Although that second example isn't a great one, a look at book sales can be a good way of judging what concerns or interests a nation. And it seems that variants of the C programming language are proving quite popular in India.

After narrowing the possible selection to tech-related books and talking to a local retailer, SiliconIndia News found that "'Object Oriented Programming with C++' by E Balaguruswamy and 'Let us C solutions' by Yashwant P Kanetkar were considered the most selling books in the last month."

Granted, sales at the single Higginbotham location may not represent tastes in all of India's 1.2 million or so square miles, and this one spot didn't quite see sales levels that would make Clancy and King proud, with about 50 copies of each book moving in September.

Still, for tech books, those numbers don't seem at all bad, and this development can be taken as a sign that C is healthy in different parts of the world. Or, since India is so closely connected to the U.S. in the tech arena, the sales numbers can be taken as a positive sign of the programming language's status in this country, too.

One additional note on popularity: considering how long C has been around, an optimistic fan might even argue that this puts it in a position to which Clancy and King must aspire. It's at least not a bad state of being.

Other popular books didn't provide C with much in the way of competition, either; "PMP: Project Management Professional Study Guide," "ALE, EDT and I DOC Technologies for SAP," and "Oracle OCA Oracle9i Associate DBA Certification Exam Guide" rounded out the top five.
